Kicking Off an Unusual Year

The College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Alumni Association got creative when welcoming students back to campus in August, holding “grab and go” Ag Dawg Kickoff events on the Athens, Griffin and Tifton campuses to comply with COVID-19 social distancing guidelines. On all three campuses, 632 students turned out to claim welcome gifts including Ag Dawg branded tote bags, Ag Dawg Kickoff 2020 T-shirts, Hardy Farms peanuts, cookies and a welcome note from the alumni association.

This year, more than 150 alumni, parents and friends contributed $4,680 for the “Get a tee, give a tee” campaign. Donors preordered commemorative T-shirts for themselves while providing the Ag Dawg Kickoff experience for a student with their contribution.

Alumni board member Farrah Newberry (BSA — Agricultural Communications, ’99) helped out at the event, handing out gift bags to students, including doctoral candidate Ky Meeks (BSA — Avian Biology, ’19). “I think everyone has to be creative these days, and our alumni association staff did a good job thinking of a way to welcome students back. We had a great turnout and students were happy to get back to school and to have that connection with campus, faculty and other students,” Newberry said.
